Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the moment you were born, and the calculator above finds it from your birth date, birth time and time zone. The Moon crosses a whole sign in roughly 2 to 2.5 days, so a few hours can change the answer. The result also shows the exact degree, the sign’s element and the Moon phase on the day you were born.
What is a Moon sign?
A Moon sign is the zodiac sign in which the Moon stood at a given moment, usually a person’s birth, measured along the ecliptic in the tropical zodiac of Western astrology. The Moon sign is one placement in a birth chart, next to the Sun sign and the rising sign.
In astrology, the Moon sign is said to describe the emotional side of a person. Astrologers associate the Moon sign with:
- Emotional reactions: how a person responds by instinct to stress, surprise or conflict.
- Needs and security: what makes someone feel safe, cared for and at ease.
- Habits and comfort: the routines and private behavior that show up at home.
- Moods: the inner life that other people may not see at first.
Cafe Astrology is a widely used astrology reference. It describes the Moon as governing “our deepest personal needs, our basic habits and reactions, and our unconscious.” These descriptions belong to a tradition, not to measured personality traits. The science section further down explains what controlled tests found.
How is your Moon sign calculated?
Your Moon sign is calculated by finding the Moon’s ecliptic longitude at your birth moment and checking which 30° segment of the zodiac holds it. The tropical zodiac starts at 0° Aries, the point where the Sun crosses the celestial equator at the March equinox.
The calculator works in four steps:
- Convert your birth time to UTC. The calculator applies your time zone, including any daylight saving time in force on that date.
- Compute the Moon’s position. The lunar engine finds the Moon’s apparent geocentric ecliptic longitude, a value from 0° to 360°.
- Divide the circle into 12 signs. 0°–30° is Aries, 30°–60° is Taurus, and so on to Pisces at 330°–360°.
- Read the degree. The remainder is the degree within the sign, for example “Leo 17°”.
- Moon's average motion
- 13.2° per day (about 0.5° per hour)
- Daily motion range
- 11.8° to 15.4° per day
- Time in one sign
- 2 to 2.5 days (2.3 days on average)
- Days with a sign change
- about 44% of calendar days
- Zodiac used
- tropical (Western astrology)
Why does birth time matter for your Moon sign?
Birth time matters because the Moon moves about 0.5° every hour and crosses a sign boundary every 2 to 2.5 days. Our lunar engine counted every sign change from 2020 to 2030: the Moon entered a new sign on about 44% of calendar days. On those days, a baby born in the morning and a baby born in the evening can have different Moon signs.
The Moon’s speed changes with its distance from Earth. Near perigee the Moon covers up to 15.4° a day and stays just under 2 days in a sign. Near apogee the Moon slows to 11.8° a day and stays about 2.5 days.
What if you don’t know your birth time?
If you leave the birth time empty, the calculator checks the whole day in your time zone. When the Moon stayed in one sign all day, you get a single, certain answer. When the Moon changed sign that day, the calculator shows both possible signs and the exact time of the change. Compare that time with what you know about your birth, such as “early morning” or “after lunch”.
How accurate is this Moon sign calculator?
The calculator places the Moon to within about 1 arcminute, which equals about 2 minutes of time at a sign boundary. It runs on Astronomy Engine, an open-source ephemeris library tested against NASA JPL Horizons and the US Naval Observatory’s NOVAS software.
- Position accuracy: within ±1 arcminute (1/60 of a degree) of the Moon’s true position.
- Sign-change times: the engine searches for the exact crossing of each 30° boundary to the second. With the ±1 arcminute position limit, the real uncertainty is about 2 minutes.
- Your input matters most: a time zone or daylight saving error of 1 hour shifts the Moon by about 0.5°, which is 30 times larger than the calculation error.
Two careful calculations can disagree on the Moon sign only for births within a few minutes of a sign change. For those births, the degree shown (for example 29.9° or 0.1°) tells you how close the boundary was.

In astrology, each Moon sign is said to shape emotional style in a typical way. These one-line summaries follow common Western astrology readings:
- Moon in Aries: quick, passionate feelings and impatience; wants things to happen now.
- Moon in Taurus: seeks familiarity, stability and physical comfort.
- Moon in Gemini: curious and restless; works through feelings by talking.
- Moon in Cancer: the Moon’s “home” sign; protective, attached to family and the past.
- Moon in Leo: needs warmth, attention and generous affection.
- Moon in Virgo: finds security in routine, small details and being useful.
- Moon in Libra: needs partnership, harmony and fairness.
- Moon in Scorpio: seeks emotional depth and intensity; loyal and private.
- Moon in Sagittarius: needs freedom, space and new experiences.
- Moon in Capricorn: reserved; feels secure through structure and achievement.
- Moon in Aquarius: observant and independent; may keep feelings at a distance.
- Moon in Pisces: intuitive and compassionate; absorbs other people’s moods.
What do the Moon sign elements mean?
Each Moon sign belongs to one of four classical elements, three signs per element: fire, earth, air and water. Astrologers read the element as the broad temperament of the Moon sign.
| Element | Moon signs | Emotional style in astrology |
|---|---|---|
| Fire | Aries, Leo, Sagittarius | Feelings shown fast and openly; needs action, attention or freedom |
| Earth | Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn | Security from stability, routine and practical results |
| Air | Gemini, Libra, Aquarius | Feelings worked out through talk, ideas and relationships |
| Water | Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces | Deep, intuitive feeling and a strong need for closeness |
The elements repeat every four signs, in the order fire, earth, air, water. The Moon therefore returns to the same element about every 9 days, after crossing 120° of the zodiac.
How is a Moon sign different from a Sun sign and a rising sign?
The Sun sign comes from your birth date, the Moon sign needs your birth date and time, and the rising sign needs your exact birth time and birthplace. The three placements move at very different speeds.
| Placement | Changes sign about every | What you need | Said to describe (astrology) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun sign | 30 days | Birth date (time if born on a cusp) | Identity, will, conscious self |
| Moon sign | 2 to 2.5 days | Birth date and time | Emotions, instincts, needs |
| Rising sign (Ascendant) | 2 hours on average | Exact time and place | Outward manner, first impressions |
Many people find that their Moon sign description reads differently from their Sun sign description. Our guide to moon sign vs sun sign compares all three placements and explains how each one is found.
What sign is the Moon in today?
The Moon is always in one of the 12 signs and moves to the next one within about 2.5 days, because it circles the whole zodiac in 27.3 days. Our live page shows what sign the Moon is in today and the degree it has reached. It also gives the time the Moon entered, the time it moves on and the sign changes for the next 7 days.
The Moon’s sign changes much faster than its phase. In one week the Moon passes through about three signs but only a quarter of its phase cycle. The 27.3-day loop through the zodiac is about 2 days shorter than the 29.5-day lunar cycle of phases. That difference is why the full moon falls in a different sign every month. To see how much of the Moon is lit right now, check the moon phase today.
Why do Vedic Moon signs differ from Western ones?
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the March equinox, while Vedic (Indian) astrology uses a sidereal zodiac tied to the stars; the two differ by about 24° today. That gap moves most people’s Moon sign back by one sign in Vedic astrology.
The difference comes from precession, the slow wobble of Earth’s axis. Precession slides the equinox point backward against the stars by about 1° every 72 years. The two zodiacs lined up about 2,000 years ago. The most widely used Indian correction, the Lahiri ayanamsa, is about 24.2° in 2026.
- Tropical Moon at 0°–24° of a sign: the sidereal Moon falls in the previous sign.
- Tropical Moon at 24°–30° of a sign: the sidereal Moon stays in the same sign.
- Share of births affected: about 80%, because 24 of every 30 degrees fall in the first group.
This calculator gives the tropical Moon sign used in Western astrology. To estimate a sidereal Moon sign, subtract about 24° from the position shown. Biodynamic planting calendars also follow the Moon against the zodiac constellations; our guide to gardening by the moon explains that tradition.
Is your Moon sign the same as your Moon phase?
Your Moon sign and your Moon phase are two separate attributes: the sign shows where the Moon stood against the zodiac, while the phase shows the angle between the Moon and the Sun. Any phase can happen in any sign.
The Sun’s sign links the two:
- New moon: the Moon and the Sun share the same ecliptic longitude, so the Moon is in the Sun’s sign.
- First quarter: the Moon is 90° ahead of the Sun, about three signs further along.
- Full moon: the Moon is 180° from the Sun, in the opposite sign.
- Last quarter: the Moon is 270° ahead of the Sun, about three signs before the Sun’s sign.
So the next new moon, on , happens in the same sign as the Sun, and the next full moon falls in the sign opposite the Sun. The eight phases of the moon follow the same Moon–Sun angle, and the moon phase calendar shows which phase falls on each day of the month.
What Moon phase were you born under?
Your birth Moon phase is the phase the Moon showed at your birth, and the calculator lists it next to your Moon sign. Each full moon falls about one sign further along than the one before, because the Sun moves about 29° during each 29.5-day phase cycle.

What does science say about Moon signs?
Controlled tests have not supported astrology’s claims about personality, including the Moon sign. In a double-blind study published in the journal Nature in 1985, astrologers tried to match birth charts with personality-test profiles and did no better than chance.
The Moon’s physical effects on Earth, such as ocean tides and moonlight, are real and well measured; our page of moon facts gives the numbers. No measured effect links the Moon’s zodiac position at birth to a person’s character. We calculate Moon signs with full astronomical accuracy because many readers enjoy astrology as a tradition and a way to reflect, not because the sign describes you.
