Moon Sign vs Sun Sign vs Rising Sign

Updated · MoonPhaseToday editorial team · How we calculate moon data

The Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign are three placements in a birth chart: the Sun sign comes from your birth date, the Moon sign from your date and time, and the rising sign from your time and place. They change about every 30 days, every 2 to 2.5 days and every 2 hours.

Key facts

  • Sun sign: set by your birth date; the Sun spends about 30 days in each sign.
  • Moon sign: needs your birth date and time; the Moon changes sign every 2 to 2.5 days.
  • Rising sign: needs your exact birth time and place; it changes about every 2 hours.
  • In astrology the three are read together; controlled tests have not confirmed any of them.

What is the difference between Sun, Moon and rising signs?

The difference is which body or point is measured and how fast it moves: the Sun sign tracks the Sun, the Moon sign tracks the Moon, and the rising sign tracks the zodiac degree on the eastern horizon.

Sun sign Moon sign Rising sign (Ascendant)
What is measured The Sun’s position on the ecliptic The Moon’s position on the ecliptic The ecliptic degree rising in the east
Changes sign about every 30 days 2 to 2.5 days 2 hours (1 to 3 hours by sign and latitude)
What you need Birth date Birth date and time Exact birth time and birthplace
Said to describe (astrology) Identity, will, conscious self Emotions, instincts, needs Outward manner, first impressions

Astrology describes each placement as a different layer of a person. Cafe Astrology calls the Sun “our ego” and says the Sun represents “reason as opposed to instinct.” The Moon, in the same reference, stands for “our deepest personal needs, our basic habits and reactions.” The Ascendant is described as the “mask” a person shows to the world. What is a Sun sign?

Your Sun sign is the zodiac sign the Sun was in on your birth date, and it is the sign horoscope columns use. The Sun moves about 1° a day along the ecliptic and spends about 30 days in each 30° sign.

Sun sign dates shift by a day or so between years, because the calendar year and the solar year do not line up exactly. Our lunar engine finds that the Sun entered Aries between March 19 at 22:33 UTC and March 21 at 10:25 UTC in the years 1950 to 2050. If you were born on the first or last day of a sign, your birth time and year decide which side of the cusp you fall on.

What is a Moon sign?

Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the moment of your birth, and finding it needs your birth time as well as your date. The Moon moves about 13° a day, roughly 13 times faster than the Sun, and changes sign every 2 to 2.5 days.

The Moon enters a new sign on about 44% of calendar days. On those days, the birth time decides which of two signs is your Moon sign. The calculator checks the exact time; if you don’t know it, the calculator shows both possible signs and the time the Moon crossed between them.

What is a rising sign?

Your rising sign, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. It changes about every 2 hours on average, as Earth’s rotation carries all 12 signs across the eastern horizon in one day.

The 2-hour figure is only an average. The ecliptic meets the horizon at a changing angle, so some signs rise quickly and others slowly, and the gap grows with distance from the equator.

The horizon depends on where you stand, so the rising sign also needs your birthplace. Two babies born at the same minute in London and Sydney share a Sun sign and a Moon sign but usually have different rising signs.

How do you find your Sun, Moon and rising sign?

You find your Sun sign from your birth date, your Moon sign from your birth date and time, and your rising sign from a full birth chart that uses your exact time and birthplace.

  1. Sun sign: look up your birth date in a table of sign dates. If you were born on a cusp day, check the Sun’s exact sign change for your birth year.
  2. Moon sign: enter your birth date, birth time and time zone in the calculator. The result gives the sign, the degree, the element and the Moon phase at your birth.
  3. Rising sign: use a birth chart calculator that asks for your birthplace. A birth time off by 15 minutes moves the rising degree by about 4° on average and sometimes changes the sign.

The Moon at your birth also had a phase, which is separate from its sign. The tool for the moon phase on your birthday shows that phase as a drawing, and the guide to the phases of the moon explains the eight phases in order.

Why might your Moon sign seem to fit better than your Sun sign?

In astrology, the Moon sign is said to describe private emotional life, which many people recognize more readily than the public identity linked with the Sun sign. That is the usual astrological explanation when a Moon sign reading feels closer.

Three explanations are common, one from astrology and two from the way people read descriptions:

The last two explanations also show why a reading can seem accurate without being specific to one person. That is why controlled tests matter.

What does science say about Sun, Moon and rising signs?

Controlled tests have not found that any of the three placements describe personality. In a double-blind study published in Nature in 1985, astrologers tried to match full birth charts with personality-test profiles. They did no better than chance.

The positions themselves are real astronomy. The Sun, the Moon and the rising point can all be calculated to a fraction of a degree. Our lunar engine shows what sign the Moon is in today and times each sign change to within about 2 minutes. The meaning given to those positions is a cultural tradition, which is how this site presents it.

Frequently asked questions

Which matters more in astrology, the Sun sign or the Moon sign?

Astrologers read them together rather than ranking them. In the tradition, the Sun sign describes conscious identity and the Moon sign describes emotional needs, so each is said to answer a different question about a person.

Is the rising sign the same as the Ascendant?

Yes. Rising sign and Ascendant are two names for the same point: the zodiac sign and degree on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of birth.

Can your Sun, Moon and rising sign all be the same?

Yes. The rising sign matches the Sun's sign around sunrise, and the Moon sits in the Sun's sign around a new moon. A person born near sunrise within a day or so of a new moon can have all three in one sign.

What is the 'big three' in astrology?

The 'big three' is a popular name for the Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign together. Astrologers treat them as the three most personal placements in a birth chart.
